Food and Basics Pantry
South County Community Services (SCCS) operates one of the over twenty Loaves and Fishes Pantries in Kalamazoo County. We partner with Loaves and Fishes to provide four days of food to any person who is hungry and in need of food. SCCS uses the “shopping” model—intended to maximize consumer choice and encourage good nutrition. SCCS recives exceptional local support from food drives, church groups, and area businesses, which provide us with donations in order to increase the amount and variety of food that we can offer. Any resident of Kalamazoo is welcome, and is encouraged to call Loaves and Fishes (343-3663) in the morning for a same-day appointment. The SCCS Pantry is open Monday through Thursday 1:00pm to 4:00pm; if you need food on a Friday, Loaves and Fishes will schedule you at another pantry.
Mobile Health Clinics
South County Community Services (SCCS) works with the Kalamazoo County Health and Community Services Department to bring two mobile health clinics to the South County area on an annual basis. In June, SCCS hosts a Vision and Hearing Screening for school-aged children. This screening fulfills requirements for school admissions and is available free of cost. In August, the Mobile Dental Clinic serves all interested adults and children, with priority given to Medicaid or MiChild participants, and a sliding fee scale for uninsured patients. Services provided include oral screenings, x-rays, cleanings, sealant, and fluoride applications.
Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) Kiosk and Navigator
South County Community Services is proud to offer a DHHS kiosk and scanner. If you need to apply for benefits, check on a completed application, or turn in proofs, you are welcome to come to the office and use the computer to do so. The Emergency Assistance Coordinator is trained to provide assistance with the kiosk through the MDHHS Navigator program. We have a variety of forms and postage paid envelopes and can print any forms that are available on the MDHHS website for your use. We encourage you, however, to utilize our scanner and kiosk to turn in proofs and applications as much as possible, as electronic methods tend to be more reliable and much faster.
Senior Outreach Coordinator
South County Community Services (SCCS) is committed to helping seniors age in place safely and securely. Our Senior Outreach Coordinator has a wide range of experience in serving seniors. She will be providing personal assistance and programming to help seniors and their families manage the challenges and opportunities they face.
South County Community Services (SCCS) is committed to helping create special holidays for all families throughout the SCCS service area. The joys of both giving and receiving are honored as the community comes together to make sure every family’s basic needs, celebrations and gifting are taken care of during the holiday season.
Current clients receiving emergency assistance at SCCS or the Generous Hands Friday Pack program are invited to apply for holiday assistance beginning in September and ending October 15. Click here to view and print the current SCCS Holiday Assistance Registration Form. Individuals, families and groups who wish to be a part of the festivities as donors or volunteers are welcome to contact SCCS after October 15, once the holiday needs are clearly identified.
Community members who would like their donation to give all year long are encouraged to support the TREE OF LIFE campaign. TREE OF LIFE helps families honor loved ones (with hand decorated ornaments on display in the community) while also helping families in need of support. All TREE OF LIFE donations go directly into the SCCS Emergency Services Fund for families who need help with utility bills, housing and other basic needs throughout the upcoming year.
